Eyelid surgery: what to expect?
Upper eyelid surgery
For upper eyelid surgery, the plastic surgeon will make the incision within the natural fold of the eyelid. The incision will be extended outward as much as possible in order to address the extraneous skin folds located on the outside of the upper lid. After the incision is carefully made, the surgeon will remove the excess fat and skin. A ptotic or droopy eyelid can be repaired at the same time. The sutures are removed in 5-6 days and most patients return to work in a week.
Lower eyelid surgery
When operating on the lower eyelids, the incision is placed along the lower lash line, this will allow excess fat and tissue to be removed. In transconjunctival blepharoplasty, no external incisions are required for patients with puffy lower lids and decent skin tone. Injectable or fat fillers may be used to increase the amount of fat in the area if dark circles are caused by a lack of it.
Upper and lower combined
Some patients require surgery on the lower and upper eyelids to effectively treat all problems. In this case the surgery lasts about 2 hours.
Eyelid surgery results and recovery
Eyelid surgery is usually an outpatient procedure performed under light general anesthesia or deep sedation supplemented by local anesthesia in the accredited Salisbury Plastic Surgery Center. After surgery, patients can expect the eyelids to be bruised and swollen, which can be minimized with ice packs and elevating the head. Most patients are well enough to return to work in a week.
