What is breast reduction?

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure that permanently reduces the size, weight, and volume of one or both breasts. Breast reduction may also reshape the breasts. However, it should be noted that breast reduction surgery does not correct or prevent sagging. Excessively large breasts may impact a woman’s self-confidence, as well as cause uncomfortable side effects, such as pain in the back, neck or shoulders, and even a condition known as thoracic kyphosis that affects the spine causing pain and difficulty breathing. Breast reduction surgery alleviates these conditions and enhances a woman’s appearance with breasts that are more proportionate to her overall figure.

How is a breast reduction performed?

Each breast reduction procedure is tailored to the individual and depends on your figure, lifestyle, and goals. Most procedures require between one and three small incisions through which the doctor removes excess fat and skin. The doctor will also move the nipple and areola to a higher position, and reduce the size of the areola. Liposuction is generally used to safely remove fat tissues from within the breast. Excess skin will be removed, and then a breast lift is usually needed to attain a healthy looking result. It is common for women requesting this procedure to go down 1 – 2 cup sizes.

Recovering from breast reduction surgery

Most patients experience some mild discomfort for the first three days to a week, after which dressings are typically removed, and patients may return to work and non-strenuous activity. Three weeks following surgery, most of the swelling and discomfort will subside, and patients can go back to their normal daily activity, including non-strenuous exercise. After two to three months, the breasts settle into their new shape and scars begin to fade.
